A total of 580 cases and 285 deaths have been recorded
The socio-economic impact in Greece in the period 2000-2023 from the extreme weather events that hit the country, meteo published.
In particular, the METEO unit of the Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development of the National Observatory of Athens (IEPBA/EAA) notes in its report that in Greece, from 2000 to 2023, a total of 580 cases of weather phenomena with negative socio-economic effects were recorded. This long list, which includes floods, lightning and windstorms has claimed the lives of 285 people.
The following maps show the number of cases of weather phenomena that affected each prefecture and the human losses per prefecture for the period 2000-2023.
Of the 580 incidents, 35% of them caused serious socio-economic effects of category 3. It should be noted that category 3 includes incidents that have either seriously affected a large part of the country, or have caused loss of life.
Data change every 12 years

The main conclusions are summarized below:
Total weather events with socio-economic impacts
In the first 12 years a total of 215 episodes were recorded (~18 on average per year) and in the second 12 years 365 episodes were recorded (~30 on average per year). Therefore, in the second half of the period 2000-2023 we had a 70% increase in weather events compared to the first half of the period.
Weather events with severe socio-economic impacts (category 3)
In the first 12 years there were 84 serious events (7 on average per year) and in the second 12 years there were 121 serious events (~10 on average per year). Therefore, the second half of the period 2000-2023 saw a 44% increase in severe weather events (category 3) compared to the first half of the period.
Loss of life from weather events
In the first 12 years there were 103 deaths (~9 on average per year) and in the second 12 years there were 182 deaths (~15 on average per year). Therefore, in the second half of the period 2000-2023 we had a 77% increase in deaths from weather events compared to the first half of the period.
