Entered the Great Wine Capitals global network
The Hellenic Tourism Organization and the South Aegean Region, with the support of the renowned Greek Master of Wine Yiannis Karakasis, took the initiative for the inclusion of Santorini and Aegean Islands wine (“Great Wine Capitals”). Founded in 1999, the Great Wine Capitals Global Network (GWCGN) is a partnership between the world’s most famous and recognized wine regions to promote wine tourism, sustainability and business development. The network provides a platform for the exchange of best practices, ideas and experiences among its members, promoting joint development and innovation in the wine sector.
Based in Paris, GWCGN promotes cities and regions that combine common economic and cultural interests. At the same time, it currently connects 12 leading wine capitals, promoting the exchange of knowledge, ideas and experiences, as well as collaboration on common challenges and opportunities.
With Santorini at the center, the islands of the Aegean Sea possess the quality, experience, knowledge and enthusiasm to contribute dynamically to the global wine community. Through this action, it highlights their commitment to continued growth, charting a bright future for wine tourism and business in the region, while at the same time confirming Greece’s impressive progress in the wine sector in recent years.
According to APE BEE, with this initiative, Santorini aspires to establish itself as a wine capital, equal to legendary regions such as Bordeaux, Rioja and the Napa Valley. As a member of the GWCGN Global Wine Network, Santorini and the Aegean Islands will reap numerous benefits, mainly through the exchange of best practices and experiences with other leading wine regions internationally, as well as through the creation of new business opportunities and innovations. Consequently, all Greek wine will benefit from this important development.
