Foreign Minister, Konstantinos Kombos, stated that the EU is not a passive observer in the Middle East conflict and emphasized the need to take a leading role. He made these statements before the start of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

Mr. Kombos called for de-escalation, stressing that diplomacy and dialogue are the appropriate path for the next steps. He referred to the need for an action plan from the EU to ensure its leadership in these critical times.

"We all call for de-escalation, we call and ask for intensive diplomacy and dialogue to be the way forward. We ask for maximum restraint," Mr. Kombos noted.

Additionally, the Foreign Minister condemned the terrorist attack against a Greek Orthodox church in Damascus, stressing that Cyprus condemns the attack in the strongest terms. He called on the Syrian authorities to investigate the incident and protect Christians in Syria.

Referring to the situation in the Middle East, Mr. Kombos said that the events are "unprecedented" and have "global implications."

The EU has taken action through the "E3 plus one" format, including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, and must continue to do so, Mr. Kombos emphasized.
