Europe: Soft Power No Longer Sufficient in Today's World

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has expressed concerns about Europe's ability to respond to current geopolitical challenges, arguing that the era of soft power has passed.

His statements come amid rising tensions in Ukraine, the Taiwan Strait, and the Middle East. Despite increasing defense spending and armament programs, Europe remains largely dependent on the United States for its security and faces challenges in supply chains.

An analysis by the Kiel Institute and Bruegel finds that while Europe has increased artillery production, it significantly lags behind in the production of tanks and infantry fighting vehicles compared to Russia.

The Paris Air Show highlighted the challenges in strengthening the European defense industry, with slow orders and a lack of unity in joint platforms. Rheinmetall's collaboration with the American Anduril sparked reactions from those who support strengthening European startups.

NATO leaders have set a target of 5% of future spending for defense, with 2% of GDP being the minimum threshold. Goldman Sachs estimates that eurozone members' spending will reach 2.8% of GDP by 2027.

A multi-layered approach is needed, including breaking down barriers to a true European defense market and strengthening cooperation between defense and startups. The US spends ten times more than Europe on research and development.
