Germany: Strong support for a European nuclear shield

Nearly two out of three Germans support the creation of a European nuclear shield independent of the US, according to a survey by the Forsa Institute for the magazine "Internationale Politik."
The survey, conducted before the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, shows that 64% of respondents believe it would be right for Europe to have its own nuclear deterrent. Only 29% expressed a contrary view.
Support for such a prospect is observed across various demographic groups. In eastern Germany, support reaches 52%, while in western Germany it is 66%. 58.5% of people under 45 and 67.5% of people over 45 support the nuclear shield.
Among Green voters, 78% want Berlin, along with Paris and London, to pursue its own nuclear deterrence capability. Christian Union (CDU/CSU) voters agree at 71%, Social Democratic Party (SPD) voters at 65%, Alternative for Germany (AfD) at 54% and the Left at 52%.
The survey was conducted by the Forsa Institute on behalf of the magazine "Internationale Politik."
