First Aid in Case of Radiation Leak: Expert Guidelines

The President of the Saint John Association and Brigade, Cyprus, physician George Pantelas, provides guidelines for first aid in case of a radiation leak. As he stated to CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY, first aid in these cases concerns protection from invisible dangers.
Mr. Pantelas, Director of the Clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Nicosia General Hospital, emphasized the need to protect the respiratory system and skin. He recommended staying indoors with closed windows and doors, and turning off ventilation and air conditioning.
If someone is outside, it is recommended to cover themselves with a mask, scarf, or long-sleeved clothing. In addition, clothing that may have been contaminated should be removed, followed by washing the body with plenty of water and mild soap. The use of a protective mask and gloves is essential to avoid inhalation or contact.
Regarding support for radiation symptoms, Mr. Pantelas mentioned addressing nausea, vomiting, fever, or rashes, hydration, rest, and immediate transfer to a medical unit. He also emphasized the importance of psychological support, managing panic and anxiety, providing basic psychological first aid, and providing clear and reliable instructions.
Regarding first aid equipment, Mr. Pantelas mentioned the need for a first aid kit with gloves, masks, bandages, antiseptics, radiometers (if available), and emergency instructions in printed form. Finally, he stressed the need for training and preparedness.
