Warning about Unsuitable Nicotine Products on the Market

The Pharmaceutical Services have identified the presence of a large number of illegal nicotine products (nicotine pouches) in kiosks and other establishments. These products are pouches containing nicotine in various concentrations, which users take through the oral mucosa as an alternative way to consume nicotine.

According to a statement by the Pharmaceutical Services, nicotine intake directly from the mouth can pose serious health risks, especially for young people whose brains are still developing. The risks include increased addiction, nicotine poisoning, heart complications, and developmental effects on the brain.

Additionally, there may be risks to oral health, such as irritation, gum inflammation, and tooth decay. The Medicines Council, in a meeting on October 2, 2024, decided that these products are considered pharmaceutical products, according to Article 2 of the Human Use Medicines Law.

In order for the products to be legally marketed in the Republic of Cyprus, a marketing authorization is required. To date, no such authorization has been issued. Consumers are urged not to purchase these products, as their distribution and sale is illegal and will be prosecuted.
