Pharmaceutical Services: Illegal Nicotine Pouches Found in Kiosks

The Pharmaceutical Services of Cyprus have announced the detection of illegal nicotine products (nicotine pouches) in kiosks and other establishments. According to the services, these products contain nicotine in various concentrations and are used as an alternative way of nicotine intake through the oral mucosa.
In their announcement, the Pharmaceutical Services warn of the risks involved in taking nicotine directly from the mouth, especially for young people, as their brains are still developing. Risks include increased addiction, nicotine poisoning, heart complications, and developmental effects on the brain.
The Medicines Council, at its meeting on October 2, 2024, decided that these products are considered medicinal products, in accordance with the Law on Medicinal Products for Human Use. Therefore, a marketing authorization is required for their legal sale on the market.
So far, no marketing authorization has been issued for these products. The Pharmaceutical Services call on consumers not to purchase these products, as their distribution and sale is illegal and will be prosecuted.
