26-year-old Azerbaijani arrested for espionage in Souda

A 26-year-old Azerbaijani national has been arrested in Crete for allegedly photographing the naval and air bases in Souda. The man, born in Azerbaijan and holding a Polish passport, had reportedly rented a hotel close to the naval base.
According to authorities, the 26-year-old was photographing potential targets, both at the Souda base and warships entering and leaving the naval station. The arrest was made following information utilized by the EYP (National Intelligence Service).
The arrested individual is expected to be brought before the Prosecutor's Office on charges of espionage. Authorities describe the case as very serious, linking it to heightened security measures following recent developments in the Middle East.
It is noted that Souda is a significant US naval and air base in the Mediterranean, making it a potential target for extremist actions.
