Book Returned to Library 82 Years Late

A book was returned to the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) in Texas, 82 years after it was borrowed in July 1943.
A resident of Oregon sent the book, titled "Your Child, His Family, and Friends" by Frances Bruce Strain, along with a letter. The sender found the book while sorting through their deceased father's belongings. His mother had borrowed it when he was 11 years old.
In the letter, the sender mentioned that his grandmother, Maria del Socorro Aldrete Flores (Cortez), took the book with her when she moved to Mexico City to work at the U.S. Embassy. Jokingly, the sender expressed hope that there would be no late fee.
SAPL eliminated late fees in 2021. The book will be on display at the Central Library in San Antonio until the end of August and will then be donated to the Friends of San Antonio Public Library for sale at the Book Cellar used bookstore.
