U.S. President Donald Trump has inaugurated a new immigrant detention center in the Everglades National Park in Florida, sparking controversy due to its isolated and dangerous location. The center, designed to house up to 5,000 people, is located on an abandoned airfield and surrounded by swamps and wildlife.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt stated that the location has a deterrent character, as it is aimed at "killers, rapists, and heinous criminals who are here illegally." State Attorney General James Atmeier said the isolation reduces security costs, as "anyone who tries to escape will face alligators and pythons."

Immigrant advocacy and environmental groups have expressed strong reactions. The center spans 77,000 acres within a protected ecosystem, and its annual operation is estimated at $450 million. Environmental organizations denounce the project as endangering the Everglades environment.
