US Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, has ordered hundreds of generals and admirals to urgently convene at a Marine Corps base in Virginia. The sudden order has caused concern, especially following recent dismissals of senior officials from the Trump administration.

According to the Washington Post, the order was issued amid the risk of a government shutdown. Pentagon spokesman, Sean Parnell, confirmed that Hegseth will address senior military leaders early next week. Approximately 800 generals and admirals serve in the US and abroad.

Senior commanders from war zones, as well as military personnel in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific are expected to attend. The order does not apply to senior officers in staff positions. The move has raised questions, as such a large gathering of active senior officers is unprecedented.

The order comes as Hegseth has already implemented changes at the Pentagon, including a 20% reduction in senior officers and the renaming of the Department of Defense to the Department of War. The government is also preparing a new national defense strategy.
