US Faces New Shutdown Over ICE Funding Dispute

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is facing a new government shutdown due to failed negotiations between Democrats and Republicans over funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Thousands of federal employees will be furloughed, while others will work without pay until Congress approves a budget. Democrats are refusing to approve new funding for the DHS due to ICE's actions, but ICE is expected to continue operating with funds approved in 2025.
Other DHS agencies, such as FEMA and TSA, will bear the brunt of the shutdown. The TSA has warned of staff shortages at airports, potentially leading to delays and flight cancellations.
Democrats are demanding changes in ICE's operations, including ending aerial patrols and requiring judicial warrants before arrests. Their opposition intensified following the deaths of Rene Gund and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.
Hakim Jeffries stated that taxpayer money should be used to reduce the cost of living and make healthcare more accessible, not to fund "untrained and masked agents."
Caroline Levitt accused the opposition of having "political and partisan reasons" behind the deadlock.
Senator John Fetterman stated that the shutdown would have "literally zero impact" on ICE.
