A shooting in a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper in New York City has left four people dead and one seriously injured. The perpetrator is believed to be 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, who committed suicide after the attack.

According to authorities, Tamura entered the building on Park Avenue armed with an assault rifle. The building houses the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL). The gunman opened fire, killing three men (one a police officer) and one woman.

Tamura was found dead on the 33rd floor with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A note found in his possession explains the motive for the attack, linking his actions to the brain disease CTE and his history as an American football player.

Tamura, from California, had worked as a security guard in Las Vegas and had excelled as a football player in high school. Authorities believe he drove across several states to reach his target.

The incident adds to a series of gun attacks in the USA. In 2024, more than 16,000 people have been killed by such attacks.
