Idaho Firefighter Ambush: One Dead, Man Found

Members of the police SWAT team located a "deceased man on Canfield Mountain" and "a firearm near him," the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office announced, following an ambush against firefighters. The ambush resulted in the death of two service members who had rushed to participate in a firefighting operation.

Sheriff Bob Norris's office stated that the order for citizens in the area to take shelter is lifted, but "there is still an active fire front on Canfield Mountain." Sheriff Norris stated that it was unclear whether the ambush was set up by one or more gunmen, while powerful rifles were used against firefighters and police officers.

The point from which they were fired had "dense vegetation," he added, emphasizing that there was no indication that the perpetrator or perpetrators intended to surrender.
