Syria: Parliamentary Elections in September – First Since Assad's Fall

Syria is expected to hold its first parliamentary elections in September following the fall of the Assad regime. According to the state news agency SANA, the vote will take place from September 15 to 20.
Mohammad Taha, head of the electoral process, stated that the vote for the People's Assembly will last six days.
These are the first elections since the fall of Bashar al-Assad and the assumption of power by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebels, under Ahmed Al-Sara.
The announcement comes amid strained relations with Israel, with clashes in the south of the country between Islamist fighters and Druze.
After a 14-year civil war, Syria is now governed by a transitional government with members of HTS, a former al-Qaeda affiliate.
The country's constitution has been suspended, and a new constitution will be drafted after the elections by the new parliament. The transitional president estimates that it will take 3-4 years to draft the new constitution.
The international community is pressing for respect for the rights of minorities and women.
