UN: Gaza Humanitarian Crisis Resembles Famines of Ethiopia, Biafra

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) warns that the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip is reminiscent of the famines in Ethiopia and Biafra. Ross Smith, WFP's Crisis Director, emphasized the need for urgent action.

Despite Israel's claims of increasing supplies, the WFP reports that it is not receiving the necessary permits to transport humanitarian aid. The IPC (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification) consortium report points out that a nightmarish famine scenario is unfolding in Gaza, due to hostilities, population displacement, and restrictions on access to aid.

The report warns that airdrops are not sufficient to reverse the disaster, as they are less effective and more dangerous than road transport. In May, the IPC had classified 93% of Gaza's population as being in a state of crisis or worse.

The United Nations warns against the use of starvation as a weapon of war, while international pressure on Israel is increasing to end the blockade of Gaza.
