Israel: Escalating Settler Violence and Accountability
Share on:

Violence perpetrated by members of the Noar Haghvaot organization has escalated, with attacks against Palestinians and Israelis. While Palestinian attacks against settlers are more numerous (6,828 versus 1,410 in 2024), Israel's handling of the issue is considered scandalous.

Jewish extremists, encouraged by political circles, have become emboldened, with only 1% of incidents reaching the courts. Noar Haghvaot operates as a gang, attacking anyone who opposes them, including the IDF and the police.

Even settler communities are calling for state intervention, with a petition circulating. Former Shin Bet chief, Ronen Bar, had warned Benjamin Netanyahu of "terrorism" due to inadequate police response and the consent of political leaders.

President Herzog acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. The Hilltop Youth, formed in 1996, now has members of all ages, with children raised in an atmosphere of extremism.

While Palestinian killings of settlers are more numerous, attacks such as the Dawabsheh family murder are condemned. The damage to the image of Israelis is significant, with prejudice increasing. The decision on the matter rests with others until the 2026 elections.

In 2011, the Hilltop Youth attacked an army base, with Ehud Barak speaking of "Jewish terrorism." Fourteen years later, the problem has worsened, with Benjamin Netanyahu once again Prime Minister.
