Iran's Assembly of Experts has chosen Mojtaba Khamenei as the successor to his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the Supreme Leader of the country, according to Iranian state media.

Mojtaba Khamenei, a 56-year-old mid-ranking cleric, has close ties to the Revolutionary Guards and was long considered a potential successor.

The announcement was made in Vanak Square, Tehran. The Assembly of Experts called on the Iranian people to maintain unity and pledge allegiance to the new leader.

Reuters reports that the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei indicates the continued control of power by hardliners in Iran.
