According to a new satellite assessment by the FAO, only 1.5% of agricultural land in Gaza is now cultivable, exacerbating the risk of widespread famine.

In a previous assessment, the FAO reported that less than 5% of agricultural land was cultivable. The latest announcement, on July 28, shows that only 2,320 acres are accessible and undamaged.

FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu stressed that "Gaza is currently on the verge of a widespread famine" and that "people are starving not because food is unavailable, but because access to it has been blocked."

Dongyu called for immediate support to restore local food production, emphasizing that "the right to food is a fundamental human right."

Before the conflict, agriculture represented about 10% of Gaza's economy, with over 560,000 people depending on it.
