Gaza Flotilla Interception: No Surprises

The interception of the flotilla attempting to break the naval blockade of Gaza was not a surprise. Israel had warned and proceeded with the interception without violence, directing the ships to Ashdod.

Images show inspections and limited use of force, in contrast to the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident. Organizers spoke of "abductions," but the initiative seemed aimed at creating an image of "heroism" for social media, with the participation of well-known figures. The aid cargo was more symbolic than substantial.

The UN's 2011 Palmer Committee deemed the naval blockade of Gaza compatible with international law, while criticizing the excessive force of 2010. Conflicting opinions exist on the matter.

Israel maintains that there are coordinated routes for delivering humanitarian aid. Since March 2024, Cyprus has established the "Amalthea" maritime corridor for delivering aid with control and traceability.

Selective outrage and "camera activism" raise questions, as there is rarely similar mobilization for other violations, such as in occupied Mariupol or Crimea, or for the release of Hamas hostages.

Cyprus promotes the "Amalthea" corridor for the safe and continuous flow of aid, calling on those who wish to help effectively to support existing routes.
