UK Defense Secretary John Healey has sparked controversy with his remarks regarding the possibility of a military conflict with China. The statements were made on July 27th from the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier in Australia, where he was participating in joint military exercises.

Healey stated that the United Kingdom would be ready to fight for Taiwan, as it has done in the past, emphasizing the importance of alliances in ensuring peace. "If we need to fight, [on behalf of Taiwan] as we have done in the past, Australia and the United Kingdom are countries that will fight together. The more prepared we are, the stronger our deterrence is," he said.

These statements contrast with the policy of "strategic ambiguity" followed by the US and the UK regarding the defense of Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory. Furthermore, they contradict the Starmer government's diplomatic shift towards China, according to former diplomat Ian Proud.

Proud argues that Britain is not in a position to simultaneously confront Russia and China, given its limited naval power. It is noted that the UK's Carrier Strike Group 25 has only four ships, while China has a fleet of at least 234 ships.
