North Korea announced that it shot down a South Korean drone that entered its airspace on January 4. According to the North Korean news agency KCNA, the drone originated from the city of Incheon, South Korea, and traveled approximately 8 kilometers before being shot down.

KCNA reported that the drone was equipped with surveillance cameras to record important facilities in North Korea. Pyongyang described South Korea as its 'principal enemy' and rejected any attempts at rapprochement from Seoul.

KCNA added that the South Korean authorities are responsible for the escalation of tension on the Korean peninsula.
