Vantefoul: Ceasefire in Ukraine Won't End Russian Threat
Share on:

German Foreign Minister, Johann Vantefoul, warns that a ceasefire in Ukraine will not eliminate the Russian threat. Vantefoul believes Russia may use a truce to prepare for a potential attack on a NATO country.

Vantefoul stressed that NATO is expanding its defense structures, and Germany is reorganizing its armed forces, increasing the number of soldiers and equipment. He also urged Europe not to be complacent if a ceasefire is achieved in Ukraine.

"Security in Europe will depend on Russia for a long time to come," Vantefoul told dpa, adding that Moscow could only be kept at bay "from a position of strength, unity within the alliance and capable armed forces."

Vantefoul emphasized the importance of credible Western security guarantees for Kyiv, mainly from the United States, as negotiations for a ceasefire in Ukraine continue. He also mentioned that Ukraine should be prepared to make concessions, including potential territorial concessions, if these are accompanied by credible security guarantees from the West.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius estimated that Russia could be in a position to attack a NATO country by 2029.
