Trinidad and Tobago on Alert Amid US-Venezuela Tensions

The armed forces of Trinidad and Tobago have been placed on high alert amid escalating tensions between the United States and Venezuela. The military leadership ordered the immediate return of all military personnel to their posts, while the police have recalled all leave, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The mobilization comes as the US has launched airstrikes against vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific suspected of drug trafficking. Reports also indicate that Washington is considering ground operations in Venezuela.
News of the heightened alert caused concern in the capital, Port of Spain, with many residents rushing to stockpile food and fuel. The government has called on citizens to remain calm, assuring them that it is in contact with the US Embassy and that there is no cause for alarm.
US President Donald Trump stated that he is not considering attacks on Venezuelan soil, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied related reports.
The US has deployed a significant military force in the Caribbean, which is expected to be reinforced by the aircraft carrier Gerald Ford. Washington accuses Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of involvement in drug trafficking, which he denies.
