Taiwan vows to defend sovereignty after China's military drills

Taiwan's President, Lai Ching-te, affirmed that Taipei will defend its independence following China's military exercises. Beijing admitted the drills were conducted to deter "external interference."
Lai emphasized the island's determination to defend its sovereignty and strengthen its defense in the face of China's growing influence. The U.S. State Department urged Beijing to cease military pressure against Taiwan.
Lai called on opposition parties to support his plan to increase Taiwan's defense spending by $40 billion.
China, in turn, described Lai's speech as misleading. China's exercises included rocket launches and the deployment of warships and aircraft near Taiwan, causing concern in the international community.
Xi Jinping reiterated that China's "reunification" with Taiwan is inevitable. The U.S. has called on Beijing to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue.
