Thailand Freezes Peace Deal with Cambodia After Soldiers Injured

Thailand has announced the suspension of its peace agreement with Cambodia, intended to end hostilities, just two weeks after its signing. The decision was triggered by the injury of Thai soldiers in a landmine explosion during a patrol near the border.

Cambodia stated that it remains committed to the agreement, which was supposed to bring lasting peace after border clashes that left more than 40 dead in July. The two sides signed the agreement in October during a ceremony with the US President in Malaysia.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he agrees with the decision of the country's armed forces that "the security threat has not actually decreased." The BBC points out that the border dispute between the two sides has a history of over a century.

Both sides had agreed to withdraw their heavy weaponry from the disputed area and appoint a team of observers to monitor the agreement.
