Russian Wood and Foam Drones: Is NATO Ready?
Share on:

Low-cost Russian drones, made of wood and foam, entered Polish airspace, triggering NATO's defense mechanisms. According to Politico, the Alliance was forced to use expensive equipment to address the threat.

Poland shot down most of the 19 drones using advanced defense systems costing billions of dollars. Experts express concerns about NATO's readiness to effectively counter such threats.

Ulrike Franke, a European policy expert, stated that the situation constitutes a "political and military challenge from Russia," emphasizing the need for better NATO equipment coverage. According to WELT, five drones were heading towards a NATO base before being intercepted.

Poland activated Article 4 of NATO and closed its airspace. The UK Defence Secretary, John Healey, announced he would consider ways to strengthen air defense in the region.

EU countries, such as Sweden and France, are developing cheaper drone countermeasures, but progress is slow.
