Russia and Ukraine have exchanged 146 prisoners of war each, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Defense in Moscow. This is the latest in a series of exchanges that have led to the release of hundreds of prisoners of war this year.

Prisoner exchanges have been one of the few areas of cooperation between the two countries since the start of the Russian offensive in 2022.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, on August 24, 146 Russian soldiers returned from territory controlled by Kyiv. In exchange, 146 Ukrainian prisoners of war were transferred to Ukraine.

Russia also stated that eight citizens of the Russian Federation, residents of the Kursk region, who were being illegally detained by Kyiv, also returned as part of the exchange.

Ukrainian forces launched a surprise incursion into the Kursk region of Russia in August of last year, seizing hundreds of square kilometers of territory.
