Russia Condemns New EU Sanctions Over Ukraine

Russia has condemned the new sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) on Moscow, citing the 2022 military invasion of Ukraine. Russian diplomats argued that the measures lack legitimacy from the UN and violate the rights of third countries.

According to Russian news agencies, the Russian Federation's delegation to the EU stated that the sanctions are meaningless without a UN Security Council resolution. "Only sanctions imposed based on a UN Security Council resolution are legitimate," the statement said.

RIA news agency reported that the EU is restricting Russian exports to countries cooperating with Russia, which is described as "economic blackmail." The EU adopted the 20th package of sanctions against Russia after Slovakia and Hungary lifted their objections following the resumption of flow through the Druzhba pipeline.

Brussels initially sought to impose the sanctions on the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, on February 24.
