Ukraine: Zelensky Signs Decree for Over-60s Recruitment Amid Shortage

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a bill allowing Ukrainians over 60 to voluntarily enlist in the army. This move comes as the country faces a severe shortage of recruits amid the ongoing Russian offensive.
According to the new law, citizens over 60 can sign one-year contracts, provided they pass medical examinations and receive approval from the unit commander. Volunteers will serve in non-combat and specialized roles. All new recruits will undergo a two-month probationary period.
Ukraine has taken other measures to address the shortage of soldiers, such as lowering the conscription age to 25 and offering financial incentives. Zelensky has requested financial assistance from the EU to increase the salaries of new recruits, a request that was reportedly rejected.
