UN: New Dispute over Nord Stream Explosions Investigation

The UN Security Council convened at Russia's request to discuss developments in the investigation of the explosions on the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea (September 26, 2022).
Germany announced the arrest of Serhiy K., a Ukrainian suspect in coordinating the explosions, who was arrested in Italy. Russia accuses the German investigation of delays and lack of transparency, claims rejected by Denmark, Germany, and Sweden.
Miroslav Jenča, UN Assistant Secretary-General, stressed that the UN relies on public information and cannot confirm conflicting claims. A UNEP investigation showed that the leaks released 445,000-485,000 tons of methane.
Ioannis Stamatekos, Deputy Permanent Representative of Greece, condemned attacks on civilians and infrastructure and expressed support for the German investigation. Denmark expressed confidence in the German authorities and rejected Russian claims of non-disclosure.
The US expressed confidence in the German judicial process and called for a focus on ending the war in Ukraine. Dmitry Polyanskiy, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia, questioned the version of amateur divers.
