At least 169 people have been killed in an attack in Abiemnhom town, in the Ruweng area of northern South Sudan. The attack took place on Sunday, and fears are that the number of casualties will rise.

Information Minister James Moniluak Madhok stated that gunmen from Mayom County invaded the town, resulting in clashes that lasted over three hours. Among the dead are 90 civilians and 79 government soldiers.

The violence underscores the growing instability in South Sudan, which has been struggling to maintain peace since the signing of a 2018 agreement between President Salva Kiir and former First Vice President Riek Machar to end the civil war.
