Nicolas Maduro: 12 Years in Power in Venezuela

Nicolás Maduro has completed 12 years at the helm of Venezuela, a period marked by crises and disputes. From a bus driver, he succeeded Hugo Chávez in 2013, but never gained the popular support of his predecessor.

His election in 2013 was heavily contested, starting a period of political instability. The economic crisis, social unrest, and US sanctions worsened the situation in the country.

In 2017, Maduro tried to expand his powers, bypassing the National Assembly. In 2018, he was re-elected in internationally disputed elections. In 2020, the Trump administration accused him of "narco-terrorism", offering $50 million for his arrest.

US Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced the reward. Maduro is supported by his wife, Cilia Adela Flores de Maduro.
