German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has criticized the Trump administration's decision to temporarily lift certain sanctions on Russia in an effort to lower energy prices amid tensions in Iran.

Merz expressed surprise at the decision, noting that G7 members had urged Trump not to ease pressure on Moscow during a teleconference.

The Chancellor stressed that Germany, along with its G7 partners and Israel, is working to end the war, while reiterating concerns about the lack of a strategy from the US and Israel to achieve this goal.

Referring to the increase in energy prices, Merz stressed that the release of international oil reserves could help mitigate prices, but pointed out that there is a problem with prices and not with supply.

Merz stated that Germany will not allow Russia to exploit the war in Iran to weaken Ukraine, nor will it allow Moscow to test NATO on its eastern flank.
