Former Prime Minister of Mali, Moussa Mara, was detained on Friday on charges of "undermining the credibility of the state and opposing legitimate authority." The arrest followed a social media post in which he expressed solidarity with political prisoners.

Mara, who served as Prime Minister from April 2014 to January 2015, had posted on July 4th promising justice for the prisoners he visited, declaring "unwavering solidarity with prisoners of conscience."

His trial is scheduled for September 29th. His lawyers have condemned the proceedings.

Mali has been ruled by the military since 2020, who have taken repressive measures against the press and dissidents, dissolving political parties and organizations.
