Korean Peninsula: North and South Korea Scale Back Border Propaganda

North and South Korea appear to be scaling back their propaganda efforts at the border, following a period of heightened tensions. North Korea had been sending balloons filled with trash, while South Korea responded with loudspeakers broadcasting propaganda messages and K-pop songs.
The South Korean military announced that it observed North Korea removing some of its loudspeakers from the border. This move comes days after South Korea removed its own loudspeakers in an attempt to de-escalate tensions.
According to CNN, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff did not disclose the exact locations where the North Koreans were removing the loudspeakers and stated that it is not yet clear whether all of them will be removed.
The previous conservative government of South Korea had resumed daily loudspeaker broadcasts in June of last year, after a years-long pause, in retaliation for North Korea's sending of trash-filled balloons.
Lee Jae-myung, the new president of South Korea, seeks to improve relations with Pyongyang. However, Kim Yo Jong, the sister of the North Korean leader, rejected the Lee government's proposals.
Tensions between the two Koreas may rise again later this month, when South Korea and the United States conduct their annual large-scale joint military exercises.
