China Asks US to Ease Export Restrictions on AI Chips

China is asking the United States to ease export controls on microchips critical for artificial intelligence (AI), seeking a trade agreement ahead of a potential summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.
According to a Financial Times report, Chinese officials have expressed to Washington Beijing's desire to lift restrictions on exports of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips.
HBM chips, crucial for the rapid execution of demanding AI tasks, are closely monitored by investors due to their use in conjunction with graphics processors, particularly those from Nvidia.
China is concerned that U.S. controls on HBM are limiting the ability of Chinese companies, such as Huawei, to develop their own AI chips. The U.S. has imposed restrictions on exports of advanced chips to China, aiming to impede Beijing's AI and defense development.
