Carney, Thucydides, and CNN: Analysis of Power and Alliances

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney referenced Thucydides at the World Economic Forum in Davos, warning of a period of disruption in the global order. His reference inspired CNN to draw a parallel between ancient Athens' stance towards Milos and the current discussion about Greenland and NATO.
Carney used Thucydides' phrase "The strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must" to describe the current situation. CNN compared Athens' occupation of Milos in 416 BC, where neutrality was not accepted, to the US interest in Greenland.
According to CNN, raw power can bring temporary gains, but long-term power is built on consensus and trust. History shows that power turned against allies can be self-destructive. Stephen Miller, advisor to Donald Trump, stated that "the real world is governed by power and strength", causing reactions.
Carney stressed that the return to Thucydides' logic is a daily experience, with tariffs and financial systems being used as means of pressure. He warned that if middle powers are not at the table, they will be on the menu, underscoring the need for collective action and alliances.
