Kallas: EU defends multilateral system - Needs strengthening

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, in a statement on the occasion of the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace (24/04), underlined the need to strengthen multilateral cooperation and respect for international law.
Kallas stated that the international order of the last 80 years is under increasing pressure, with international law being violated and institutions being challenged. She made special reference to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and the conflicts in the Middle East and Sudan.
The High Representative noted that the United Nations remains the only global framework with the legitimacy to represent the global interest, stressing that multilateral cooperation does not fail because it is outdated, but because its principles are not respected.
The EU remains committed to defending the multilateral system and strengthening it, with Kallas stressing that respect, accountability and consistent application of international law are a prerequisite for maintaining peace. She also stressed the importance of women's participation in peace processes, respect for human rights and cooperation with civil society and young people.
In conclusion, she stated that solutions for maintaining peace must be built collectively.
