A court in Iran has imposed a new prison sentence on Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, a leading figure in the Iranian human rights movement.

Mohammadi was sentenced to six years in prison for "gathering and conspiring to commit crimes." She was also given a two-year ban on leaving Iran.

The 53-year-old activist was arrested on December 12 in the city of Mashhad after speaking at a memorial service for lawyer Khosro Alikordi.

Mohammadi's health condition is worrying, as she had been on a hunger strike protesting the detention conditions. She was transferred to a hospital but returned to prison before completing her treatment.

Over the past 25 years, Narges Mohammadi has been repeatedly tried and imprisoned for her actions against the death penalty and the mandatory dress code for women in Iran.

The new conviction comes amid international pressure regarding human rights in Iran.
