US and China in Tensions Over Panama Canal Ports

Panamanian authorities have taken control of two ports on the Panama Canal after the contract with Hong Kong's CK Hutchison was canceled. This development has triggered geopolitical tensions between the US and China.
Panama's President, José Raúl Mulino, denounced a lack of transparency in the contract, while the audit court reported debts of $1.2 billion from PPC.
The contract had been renewed in 2021, but the court deemed it disproportionately favorable to the Hong Kong group.
APM Terminals and Terminal Investment Limited (TiL) will temporarily manage the Balboa and Cristobal ports, respectively, for 18 months, pending a new international tender.
CK Hutchison warned of damages and appealed to the International Chamber of Commerce.
The US welcomed the decision, while China stated it would protect its interests.
The Minister of Labor assured that there would be no layoffs, but there is uncertainty among the 1,200 employees.
