Analysts in The Guardian liken such a possible agreement to a "new Yalta," where the great powers decide the fate of other countries without their participation. Despite the White House's efforts to temper expectations, Trump has referred to a possible "exchange of territories" between Russia and Ukraine.

The Guardian comments that Trump's unpredictable approach to foreign policy may favor US rivals, but also disappoint them. Putin is expected to try to take advantage of the opportunity to influence Trump during the meeting.
