Germany Rejects Recognition of Palestinian State

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Germany will not join an initiative by Western allies to recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Merz made these statements at a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mike Carney, who announced that Canada plans to recognize a Palestinian state at the General Assembly, following similar announcements from France and Britain.
"The position of the federal government is clear regarding the recognition of a Palestinian state," Merz said. "We will not join this initiative, as we do not believe that the conditions for recognizing a state have been met at this time."
Germany maintains that the recognition of a Palestinian state should be one of the final steps towards a two-state solution, where Israelis and Palestinians live peacefully side by side. Emmanuel Macron also plans to take similar action, while Britain has warned Israel that it will recognize a Palestinian state under certain conditions.
Carney justified his decision by saying that the prospects for a two-state solution are deteriorating.
