France: Iran Sanctions May Be Reimposed Over Nuclear Program

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that sanctions against Iran may be reimposed if the country refuses to negotiate a strict framework for its nuclear program.
The sanctions, which were in effect ten years ago, concerned sectors such as defense, energy, and banking. France, along with its European partners, is considering reinstating the global embargo against Iran through a letter to the UN.
Jean-Noël Barrot referred to the "snapback" mechanism, which gives the UN Security Council the jurisdiction to reinstate international sanctions. This clause was included in the 2015 Vienna Agreement.
According to Resolution 2231, any participating state can report a "significant violation of commitments" by another state, potentially triggering the automatic reinstatement of sanctions.
