EU Refrains from Expanding ASPIDES Mission to Strait of Hormuz

EU foreign ministers have expressed a desire to strengthen the European naval mission ASPIDES in the Red Sea but have currently rejected expanding its mandate to the Strait of Hormuz.
EU High Representative, Kaja Kallas, stated that member states appear reluctant to actively engage in a military conflict. "In our discussions, there was a clear desire to strengthen this operation (ASPIDES), but for the time being, there was no willingness to change its mandate," Kallas said.
Kallas emphasized that the EU is focusing on diplomatic initiatives to de-escalate tensions in the region, noting that EU foreign ministers had a working lunch with the Indian Foreign Minister to explore potential initiatives.
The ASPIDES mission will continue to protect commercial shipping in the Red Sea, with a possible reinforcement of naval assets from member states.
