The European Union has expressed concern about the increase in migrant flows from Libya during a meeting of heads of state on the sidelines of the European Council, organized by Italy.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stressed that Libya is a major problem due to increased flows to Greece and Italy, expressing Cyprus' support for these countries.

Nikos Christodoulides also presented Cyprus' proposal for a new plan, implemented on June 2, regarding asylum seekers or political refugees from Syria.

At the European People's Party (EPP) Summit, the situation in the Middle East was discussed, with President Christodoulides referring to the role of the EU and the upcoming Cypriot presidency.

Annita Demetriou, President of DISY, stressed the crucial diplomatic role that the EU must play in de-escalating tensions in the region.

The EPP expressed its support for Cyprus' accession to the Schengen area in 2026.
