The war in Iran raises significant questions about the application of international law, according to Dr. Antonis Stylianou, Professor of Law at the University of Nicosia. Speaking to ΚΥΠΕ, he stated that the conflict indicates a shift towards unilateral action by powerful states.

Dr. Stylianou noted that international law is facing challenges, as geopolitical shifts are observed in the interpretation and application of international rules. He referred to previous examples such as Venezuela and Greenland.

He explained that international law prohibits the use of force, with the exception of authorization by the UN Security Council or the exercise of the right to self-defense. He noted that in the case of Iran, Russia and China could veto any authorization from the Security Council.

Dr. Stylianou emphasized that Cyprus may face economic consequences from the war, such as rising fuel prices and potential impacts on tourism. Despite the challenges, Cyprus remains one of the most stable countries in the region.

Finally, he mentioned the possibility of disruptions in transport and trade in the wider Middle East region.
