Amnesty International Calls for War Crime Investigation in Iran

Amnesty International is calling for an investigation into the Israeli bombing of Evin Prison in Tehran as a war crime. According to the organization, the Israeli airstrikes constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law.
In its statement, Amnesty International emphasizes that there is no credible evidence to suggest that Evin Prison was a legitimate military target. The organization bases its report on videos, satellite photographs, and testimonies.
On June 13, Israel launched airstrikes in Iran, with the aim, according to the government, of preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. On June 23, a bombing at Evin Prison cost the lives of at least 79 people.
At the time of the attack, Evin Prison held 1,500 to 2,000 people, including dissidents, opposition members, foreigners, and individuals with dual citizenship. Among them were a French couple, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who had been detained in Iran since May 2022 and are accused of espionage.
