Erfan Soltani, who had been sentenced for participating in protests in Iran, was not executed today, according to a family member. The 26-year-old was arrested last Thursday in the city of Karaj.

Soltani was sentenced to death just four days after his arrest, a period that, according to human rights activists, deprived him of a fair trial. He was also denied access to a lawyer and legal defense, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, based in Norway.

Donald Trump stated that he was informed that executions in Iran have stopped. The Norwegian Hengaw Organization for Human Rights stated that the possibility of his execution remains high.

Soltani has become a symbol of defiance for Iranian activists as authorities intensify the crackdown on protests.
